I love music as much as I love books and movies, s I love music as much as I love books and movies, so I’m starting to spotlight some really talented indie singer-songwriters on my blog. First up is alternative-pop artist Ofelia K. Fans of Lana Del Rey, Regina Spektor, or Mazzy Star should take notice. If you like the style and musicality of those artists, I think you’ll also love @ofeliakmusic -- I edited this short musical montage with pieces from Ofelia K’s songs (the full 2-minute version is on my blog). Go there to watch it and to read the full music review!

BOOK BUSINESS: PUBLISHING PAST PRESENT AND FUTURE BOOK BUSINESS: PUBLISHING PAST PRESENT AND FUTURE by Jason Epstein, the former editorial director of Random House, was released in 2002. So technically I read it almost two decades too late, but I went into it knowing that much of its content is outdated. In fact, I partially read it BECAUSE it’s outdated, which makes it interesting in that it’s a snapshot in time, taken when the publishing industry was undergoing rapid changes due to technology, the internet, and big box stores like Barnes & Noble and the now defunct Borders edging out niche booksellers and Mom & Pop stores. Amazon was just in its infancy. ⠀
.⠀
I most enjoyed reading about Epstein’s early days in publishing, those romanticized stories of NYC in the 1950s and 1960s when famous writers like William Faulkner would crash on the office couches after a late night session. ⠀
.⠀
Epstein’s predictions for the future were also interesting and often correct. However, twenty years later, some of the predictions that he felt confident about didn’t really come true. For example, we don’t have book kiosks on street corners where you select a book from a computer screen, pay for it, and while you stand there, the machine prints and binds it on demand within minutes. This form of printing/buying/selling does exist, but it’s not widespread.⠀
.⠀
I hope that Epstein continues to be right about one of his predictions: Readers will never stop wanting to hold physical books in their hands. No matter how many digital options there are, nothing will ever fully replace the magic of turning the pages. For me, I know it never will.

On the chopping block… I really hope the rumor t On the chopping block… I really hope the rumor that Japan is cancelling the 2021 Olympics is just a rumor! I love watching the Olympics every time they come around, but I’m especially looking forward to it after this crazy year we’ve all had. 🌎 Maybe it’s not going to be realistic for them (or anyone) to host such a huge event so soon (and world health and safety comes first), but I’m holding out hope that they can find a way to safely make it happen that’s also economically feasible…⠀

It’s coming for me! Swipe to see a video of fluf It’s coming for me! Swipe to see a video of fluffy feral bunnies, because feral bunnies are just so cute. I say “feral” because even though they are quite friendly and fluffy, these bunnies taking over the south end of Whidbey Island are not pets. They’re running wild.⠀
.⠀
There are two story versions as to how Langley came to be a major breeding ground for bunnies. The first story, as told to me by a local, is that in the late ‘90s, the fairgrounds would give out bunnies as prizes to the kiddies. The parents who didn’t want to raise pet bunnies would let them loose in the parking lot. Hmm, because that is definitely the most reasonable way to deal with an unwanted pet; don’t give the bunny back to the fair, just dump the thing. #adulting⠀
.⠀
The second story, which is Wikipedia’s version, is that in the late ‘90s, a bunch of bunnies escaped from a 4H enclosure at the fair (Go, bunnies, go! WATERSHIP DOWN, BITCHES!). ⠀
.⠀
The bunnies are most densely clustered at the fairgrounds where I shot this video. You can also see them hopping around the high school grounds and cruising about town. ⠀
.⠀
Many of the locals don’t like the bunnies tearing up their yards and gardens. There is much debate as to how to handle the burgeoning bunny population which is showing no signs of slowing down (you know that saying about jack rabbits…). 🐰
You can always go back to the drawing board. ✏️ 💗
