Not to boast (too much)… but my deluxe CD of Eve Not to boast (too much)… but my deluxe CD of Evermore arrived in the mail this weekend, which means that I have the two bonus songs that aren’t yet available on streaming (“Right Where You Left Me” and “It’s Time to Go.”). What are your favorite songs off of Evermore?⠀

The acting is fantastic in this film! It hits Hulu on December 27th. 🎥 🍿

This one is personal, and I’m going to share the This one is personal, and I’m going to share the inspiration behind it. I wrote a poem for my husband Eric, because he lost one of his brothers on Saturday night. Don was a sensitive spirit who made us all laugh and feel loved. Losing him cuts deep. Eric asked me to share the poem, because it helped him. Maybe you are someone who needs to hear these words too.⠀
.⠀
Grief is messy, and it’s normal to feel overwhelmed with complicated, painful thoughts and regrets. Eric was having a difficult time with the fact that he didn’t get to say an actual goodbye to his brother. ⠀
.⠀
People often embrace the notion that we need to have a perfect goodbye where we get to say everything in our heart. But in real life, there is no such thing as a perfect goodbye. Even when you know in advance that a loved one is dying and you’ve been given the opportunity to say goodbye, you often feel like it didn’t come out right or you forgot to say something or you were too overcome with emotions. And when it’s an unexpected death, you may find yourself with a goodbye that means you hadn’t talked in weeks or months. Or maybe the last conversation was an argument. Or you hadn’t responded yet to a voicemail or text. Perhaps you can’t even remember what was said, or you do remember but it was unremarkable: just “see you later” with no hug or “I love you” sentiment. ⠀
.⠀
But this concept that our last exchange or goodbye is somehow more important than every other exchange or goodbye we shared throughout a lifetime is simply not true. People tend to put emphasis on the last exchange, maybe because it’s most recent and thus most vivid in the beginning stages of grief. Or maybe because it fits a storytelling narrative in our minds that makes us believe it should be more important. ⠀
.⠀
But here’s the truth: That last exchange is not the real and only goodbye. You shared a lifetime of moments with someone that you loved. 2020’s moments are not more important than 2012’s moments or 1985’s moments. ⠀
.⠀
Everything that has ever been shared is the sum total of the relationship, which means that we spend a lifetime saying goodbye to the people we love. ⠀
.⠀
In loving memory of Don Colley ❤️

I don’t 100% agree with this quote (“You never I don’t 100% agree with this quote (“You never have to change anything you get up to write in the middle of the night.” -Saul Bellow). Any good writer revises… and then revises again and again… and then polishes… and then realizes another revision is in order…. thus more revising, then polishing, then proofreading, and so on and so forth. But I do LOVE the sentiment of it, because the heart of this quote is true for me. The times that I’ve found myself awake in bed with my mind spinning words and denying sleep, and I’ve given in to the call of it, that 2AM writing feels effortless and inspired. And in the morning, when I look at the pages to see what I produced in a witching hour haze, I’m typically happy with the results (that is, happier than usual).⠀
.⠀
In today’s blog, I examine some quotes on writing from well-known writers. Some I agree with quite a lot (Stephen King, Toni Morrison) and some I don’t much agree with (looking at you, Charles Bukowski). Link in bio.⠀

Almost 2 years ago, a mystery-thriller that I wrot Almost 2 years ago, a mystery-thriller that I wrote, produced, edited, and acted in premiered on Showtime. LAST SEEN IN IDAHO was one of my favorite projects from start to finish, and it had a ton of great people on board. The film was directed, produced, and edited by the multi-talented @eric.colley.official whose vision, storytelling abilities, and calm, easy leadership always impresses me. Our fantastic cast brought the story to life with leads that included @wes_ramsey - @shawnchristian - @lexnichs – and Casper Van Dien. Our entire crew and producing team – incl. @edkahl and Nidal Kahl – kicked ass to get this done in the short amount of time we had (we shot the film in 17 days with over a dozen locations). Then there’s the gorgeous cinematography by @bryantjansen and the coolest score by @jeffjonesmusic and first-rate visual effects by @polkablues … the list goes on and on, and the only reason I hate acknowledging anyone is because there isn’t enough room here to acknowledge everyone. But this film was a great collaboration amongst many creative people.
.
You have until the end of the month to catch Last Seen in Idaho on Showtime. If you aren’t a Showtime subscriber or you miss it, don’t worry - it’s also available many places on-demand and that list is ever-changing and expanding. Plus the DVD is for sale on Amazon (with 52 minutes of behind-the-scenes!).

Happy, Happy Halloween! This photo is from last ye Happy, Happy Halloween! This photo is from last year when I was on set in Alabama acting in the horror film HELLBILLY HOLLOW. The film is currently touring the US with theatrical screenings. (More details about that are on my website – www.HallieShepherd.com – link in bio). Have a fun and safe Halloween, everyone!
I LOVE gymnastics. I’m not just one of those Oly I LOVE gymnastics. I’m not just one of those Olympic fans. I watch it all year – Nationals, American Cup, Worlds (when there’s not a pandemic, that is). Growing up, my sister and I would record the competitions onto VHS tapes that we’d watch over and over again. I can quote stats in this sport better than in any sport, even the ones I played. I never was a gymnast, but I taught myself handsprings and backhand walkovers and one-handed cartwheels. I never learned to do a backflip… but in some alternate universe, I’m positive I can do a 2 and 1/2 twisting Yurchenko and stick the blind landing. ⠀
. ⠀
Enough about me, what about this book that’s leaning against these Halloween pumpkins? If you knew what I was talking about when I said “Yurchenko vault,” you will LOVE this book by sports journalist Dvora Meyers @dvorameyers : The End of the Perfect 10: The Making and Breaking of Gymnastic’s Top Score – From Nadia to Now.⠀
.⠀
If what I said sounded like a foreign language to you, I think you will still enjoy this book if you like well-researched sports journalism. ⠀
.⠀
This non-fiction read delves deeply into the history and evolution of the Perfect 10 score. If, like me, you’ve always wondered why Nadia’s 1976 bar routine earned her the first Perfect 10 when her feet slid on the landing, this book will explain precisely why (the politics, the flaws in the scoring system at that time, and the fact that YES, she did deserve that Perfect 10 but it probably should have been called a Way-Better-Than-Everyone-Else-10). ⠀
.⠀
This book also covers noteworthy events and controversies in the sport, such as the first Women’s Team Olympic Gold in 1996, Paul Hamm and his come-from-behind All Around Win at the 2004 Olympics, and an exploration of how the 2000 Olympic Women’s Team was ultimately failed by USA Gymnastics. It also spends a fair amount of time on college gymnastics – the recruitment process, the competition mentality, and why those four years are often the happiest four years of an elite gymnast’s career.⠀
.⠀
If you’re a fan of gymnastics, get this book. You will devour it, and even if you think you know a lot about the sport, be prepared to learn much more!
